410 reloading with brass shells and IMR4227

Hi all,

I am a aspiring reloader and hopefully soon to be "caster" from South Africa. Out here at the south end of Africa we are very limited in out powder choice and available reloading data.

I am hoping to reload for my Model Atlas Combo 22lr/410 with fire formed 303 brass. I have reloading info for using normal shot shells with our Somchem S265 powder with 209 shot shell primers but thus far have not been able to find any info on for using it with either a large pistol primer or a large rifle primer in the brass cases.

According to Somchem the S265 is closely related to IMR 4227, H4227, Hercules 2400, Olin W296 and ADI AE2205. Do anyone have load data on any of theses for use in Brass Casses?

ive used 4227 in 444 cases modified for my Mossberg 500 410 I think I was using 17 gr I cant remember off the top of my head . the problem was there was just to much powder I have Winchester aa, federal , and claybuster wads I had to trim a bit off the petals for everything to fit in the case and get an overshot card on top. they seemed to shoot ok I was able to blow a clay pigeon out of the sky with them . I also tried 4227 in win aa hulls same powder charge with 1/2 oz shot and actually had to dump a small amount of shot to crimp the case closed .4227 is a good powder but as far as for a 410 im thinking maybe if would be better suited for 3 inch shells rather than 2 1/2

adi 2205 12 gns 1/2 oz loads
2400 13 grains 1/2 ounce loads.
That's all I know

To be safe I'd start lower and work up a few grains.

Thanks Guys, The loads you guys quoted are they with pistol or rifle primers? The 2205 12grn and 2400 13grn is very close to the recommend start for our S265 of 12.3grn it max out at 15.4grn. http://www.somchemreload.com/search?c=12&f=294

the 444 marlin cases I used are drilled out for 209 primers .i hate to waist pistol or rifle primers when 209s are pretty much always available

Thanks for the info. Anybody know if you can drill out 303 cases to take the 209 primers?

I just did up a couple of dozen .303 .
Anneal them first, especially at neck and shoulder area.
I then used a 9.3 resizing die to Open up the shell.
The .303 rims were too thick to chamber,so, filed them down,until the original head stamp is gone.I.e < 1.5mm thick
Primed with Federal large pistol primer.I have read over the last few months,that shotgun primers require a lower energy strike to ignite, similar to pistol primers.while rifle primers need a harder strike.Bertram ,here in Oz recommends Large pistol primers for his cases.I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago when I ordered a box of brass .410 cases.
ADI recommends 14 grains of 2205. Many users of 4227 state the powder seems unburnt,with lots of residue.if you have nothing else,go right ahead and use it. I used 11.4 gr of Blue Dot,over powder wad is 1.5 mm thick, cut from a packing carton, with a sharpened .45 ACP case.
Wads were 2x 1.5mm cardboard, as above,previously soaked in Lee Alox and white spirit mixture and dried.
Plastic wads like win or Rem were designed for plastic shells, and will be a loose fit in the brass shells. They may not offer much of gas sealing in the brass cases,as the ID of brass cases is more than that of the plastic .410 shells-hence the cardboard wads.
Shot is 200 gr of no.7 shot.over shot wad was same ,carton of 1.5 mm thickness.

I have converted several different berdan primed cases to use the shotgun primers, I turn the case in a lathe, a drill press would do as well.
I drill the case out with a #4 , 60' center bit, drill deep enough the flange of the battery cup is flush with the base.
I have used the cases done this way with rifle loads that had a claimed pressure of 40,000 psi.
Had no problems with gas leakage.
