    Tite Group

Does anyone have any experiance with Tite Group in rifle cartridges? I just bought 1 lb. I'm mostly looking for low velocity loads, under 1300 fps.

I'm enterested in cartridges such as,

    22 Hornet
    222 Rem
    25/20
    25/35
    32/20
    30/30
    32/40
    32 Special

I think you will find that Titegroup is too fast a powder for rifle loads. I have only used it in straight wall pistol loads, (45 and 38). Definitely too fast for 9mm and .40

The only part of the metric system America has embraced is the 9mm.

See the thread on squirrel loads for the .223 (in the favorite loads forum). TiteGroup was designed to be position insensitive, which makes it a good choice for "gallery" loads in rifle rounds.

I haven't used it in any of your cartridges, but have worked up loads in the .223. In your .222, try 3.0 grains under a 55 cast bullet. That should get you very near 1300 fps.

    Rocky,
Thank you, That's one down 222 and 223 aren't to much different in capacity.

The real reason that I want loads for these calibers is for subsonic velocity's and am looking for starting points.

    Thanks again,

    Frank

I'd begin with 2.0 for the Hornet, 2.5 for the two */20 cases, 3.0 in the deuce and 4.0 in the 30/30-based cases. You may have to work a bit up or down from there, but those ought to be quite safe starting points.

    22 Hornet / 47 gr cast / 3.0 TG / 1 1/2 primer - 1,580 f.p.s.

    30-30 / 120 gr cast / 7.0 TG / WLP primer - 1,400 f.p.s.

Rocky and w30wcf, How clean do your loads burn? The reason that I wanted to use it, is because I thought that it might burn very clean. I had started useing B'eye for this but, it wasn't as clean as I wanted.

Any SD or ex spread numbers to go with your loads?

I don't like TG in handgun rounds, would never consider it for even gallery loads in rifles. It's way too fast & the charge way to small, but it doesn't stop others from using it.

Pretty clean. Max spread about 40 f.p.s. Good accuracy.

I tried it some, and didn't like it much. Accuracy not as good as I'd like. I'm using up the last of it in my 45 ACP. Now what I do like in light rifle loads is AA#2. It's not position sensitive, doesn't build up carbon fouling in the throat like the flake powders, is cheap, and flows well in powder measures. Some of my most accurate light loads use it, from the hornet up to the 375 Taylor. Rule of thumb is your best load is going to be about 20% of available case capacity. Never exceed 30%, and by the time you get there accuracy has gone to pot anyhow.

Frank, it's pretty hard to judge "clean" with cast bullets, but none of my post-range cleaning sessions required more than a couple of wet patches and a dry one on a jag.

    2.5 TG, 1050 fps, 12 SD, 0.6@50

    3.5 TG, 1335 fps, 21 SD, 0.9"

The 2.5 load tied for lowest SD of eight different loads with this bullet, using seven powders.

Thank you all for you help. It's been so cold here (Oregon) that I haven't got to the range to try anything yet.

Noblade, I will try #2 as my next step. There are so many powders out there now a days that at the price of powder, I'd go broke trying all of them if I had to buy new. I got the TG at a gun show for $10 and I had heard it was clean burning from pistol guys.

    Again, thanks,

    Frank

In the 44-40 I have not found a more accurate powder for 1,100 f.p.s. loads.
6.2 / Tite Group does 1,150 f.p.s. with a 215 gr cast bullet and will punch 1" groups @ 50 yards (Marlin Cowboy rifle) if I do my part.

I have used 5 gr Titegroup in various milsup rifles with cast bullets; it makes good gallery loads. I went through a period where I wanted a gallery load for every rifle, fun while it lasted.

Huh? Titegroup works great in 9mm & 40 S&W. Use it all the time.

i have used it in my 45/70, 30-30 and 300 win mag. all of course for way reduced cast boolit loads, using a gas check boolit w/o the check.

    XWrench,
What was your 45/70 and 30/30 loads and velocitys if you have it?

I use it in 25 acp,32 acp,380acp,9mm,38 special,45 acp! I like the accuracy, burns clean, economical(a little goes a long way)... but IMHO burns way to fast for use in a rifle to have any kind of safety margin!!
