    1936 M91/30 Lyman 311291

Pulled out a M91/30 from 1936 to shoot for the first time. It's been sitting quietly in a box for several years.

Anyway, wanted to do some shooting today. Don't have much of anything loaded up. Had some .3105" diameter Lyman 311291 bullets I cast up for the M1 Garand. From past experience with some of my other moving, I figured why not try them. Plus, I wanted to try out a new Lyman Gen 5 powder dispenser.

Time was short, got 50 rounds loaded. Arrived at the range 1 minute after sunset. Yup, getting a bit dark. Another fellow showed up as well. Got a bit darker as I setup at 50 yards.

Bad eyes and dark do not go well together.

Anyway, could not make out the grey targets well, and front sight was somewhere. Did have a spotting scope setup.

600 meter rear sight setting, hit paper. Fired 4 more rounds more or less guessing as to sight picture.

Woot! 4 shots nice and close.

    Rest rear sight 400 meters.

Fired 5 more rounds, just trying to aim at a grey blob and hoping I am seeing the front sight, light for seeing out that far for me gone.

Grin, think the combo with this rifle did well.

15.8gr Hercules 2400 (Alliant sticker over Hercules).

    Length set to touch lands.

Might try again before work Monday.

I know the groups don't look that good, but I feel good about these as I was shooting into the dark. Plus, first time out and the old rifle did well.

Used the 311291 in my M-39 with IMR 4198, had good results with it also. Looks like your off to a very good start.

Awesome grouping. Hope to get some time shooting my mosins at 100m.
Will be using Longshot and 4227. Had much success with 4198 and 4895 with cast 314299 and 316202
    Be well.

Ya'think it's fully ripe by now?

    .3105" diameter Lyman 311291
Suggest 314299. (its just another mold what's the big deal?)

    Thumbs up

What Dutch said (unless your -291 casts unusually large)!

I am not getting any leading with this bullet diameter size. The bullet is most likely a bit small on the driving bands. A 314299 is in transit now. I also have the Lee185gr 312-185-1R. Just didn't have any cast up right now.

Planning on slugging the bore when I find my dowel rod sections.

Shot this one 50 yards prone. However, used 18.5gr SR4759.

Did try 19.1gr SR4759 the next day. Groups opened up. Need to try a fatter bullet most likely.

Another thing I noticed is that these all shoot to the left. Normally, they shoot to the right in my other rifles.

Mine shot the 311284 very well. My mold is an older Ideal, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

VR, It's not that #311291 inherently unfit for your rifle, but more a question of bore diameter v. -291's diameter. In truth, in a Mod. 28/30 Finn. Nagant (Sako) I once owned, -291 was wonderfully accurate. Indeed, it was most accurate in that gun (at .311"), but a poor shooter in my .30-30 and .30-06.

The 314299 works wonders in older 7.62/.30 cal military guns, it will definitely tighten up those groups.

i shoot the 314299 out of a 1936 Tula M91/30 Ex-sniper that has probably seen alot of combat and sports a .315 groove diameter. luckily my NOE version of the 314299 drops at .316, which is perfect for all my uses.

i also use the 314299 in two 1891 Argentines, and a 1898 Krag.

Very interesting post, and I don't want to hijack it. I am working with some acquired bullets that are a dead ringer for the 311332, they measure .3125 across the bands but weigh 170 gr w/checks. Does this make any sense?
]Why does anyone need an assault rifle? My first need is articulated in the US v Miller 1939 decision: every citizen eligible for volunteer or conscript military service, every member of the unorganized militia, should be familiar with his nation's military service rifle, and the service rifles of potential allies and foes as well, to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.

Can not say enough about the 314299.
Except this loves all guns and powders.

Bought this one several years back and it's been in the shipping box ever since.

I have several M91/30 rifles. Going through them to test accuracy to determine which I want to sell off. If I had it my way, I wouldn't be selling any, but need to thin the herd.
