Accuracy with the Lyman slug

I finally got a Lyman mold for the sabot slug, cast up 50 of them out of ACWW and using 23 grains of Unique loaded up 30 of them. At 50 yards I get three holes touching and all is well. At 100 yards, I get 12" groups. Is this normal for this slug? because it's a wadcutter design does it de-stabilize past 50 yards? Do I need to fill the back of the slug with a hot glue? Any input would be appreciated. The shot gun is a Remington 870 with a Hastings barrel that was made in France...

Hello Marine Sgt, I.m assuming its a rifled barrel, you need to put a .125-16 ga or .125-20 ga nitro card below slug in wad to give it a firm strong base at launch.

Choose fold crimp instead of roll crimp.

This don't help things either:

Try putting a 1 inch piece of plain paper on powder to cure this seeping problem.

Lyman is quite capable of 4 to 6 inch group at 100 yards provided you do your home work and try different wads etc.

Yes SBS I am using a rifled barrel, will filling the base of the slug with a hot gun gun also work in place of the nitro wad card?

Hello Marine Sgt, yes you can fill the slug base cavity with hot melt glue instead of nitro card.
In a rifled barrel you do not need to test slug/wad combo by pushing it through the barrel, its intended for only smooth bore barrel!

In your vast and highly respected experience/ knowledge, Ajay, maybe you could help me out?

if I get a rifled barrel for my shotgun, and shoot reloaded Lyman slugs out of it, will I get reasonable results?

Background: I basically pour out birdshot from shotshells (That is all I can get in my country…) and cast 525gr Lyman slugs, then insert the slugs back into the shot-cup, and roll-crimp.

I have gotten reasonable accuracy out to 38 yards out of a smoothbore (No choke) Mossberg 500A. But I need to improve this, and I am thinking of getting a 24” Fully rifled, ported barrel.
Will this work with my Lyman slugs? I have also recently put the plastic over-shot wad on top of the slug (To improve unrolling the roll-crimp, without the wad petals being chewed up or torn up.)

Hello and greetings Y-man, I admire your sincere efforts and enjoy your posts.

I hear you have been removing the shot and replacing it with the Lyman 525 slug which is a good deadly accurate slug with the right combo.
It is capable of giving 4 inch three shot group at 100 yards with some home work and practice with a rifled barrel!

The center picture with the slug in wad seems to be the right height and I hope you did put a nitro card below the slug and if you did then just switch over to the next size hull say 3 inch and just fold crimp.

If you want to continue to roll crimp then you are smart, you use the clear plastic over shot card designed to break apart, great!

When you take the shot out and replace it with the slug you really do not know how well or how tight the the combo is in your barrel for safety, please pull one out and do my push through test for your own safety and knowledge!

I applaud Y-man and his ingenuity. The shot should cast a nice slug. Nice looking roll crimp. Should stop most any creature.

The slug needs either the card wad or back filled with glue or the wad will wedge up in there release crooked. I messed around a lot with this slug getting things tweaked. Of all the powders Blue dot proved to be the most accurate with winchester WSF a close second. I shoot them out of a ultra slug hunter off the bench about a 2.5 - 3 inch group 112 yards. After about 6 or 7 shot the plastic fouling will build up some for me and they will start to open up.
I loaded them in a federal gold medal 2 3/4 hull 45grains blue dot and a fed 12s4 wad .Slugs were backfilled with hotmelt and sanded flat, plus the take the slug and lay it on it side and roll file over the two bearing edges to give them a light knurled look helps grip the wad for spin. On the 3 inch shell go to this link http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...hlight=peter"] about 5 pages worth I load this now with 45 grains blue dot with the components that Phassler worked up excellent accuracy. I prefer the 3 inch load over the 2 3/4 it's a tight fit for everything in the shorter shell. Every once in a while I would get a crimp to open up a touch
